Odilon Redon (1840 – 1916) was a french painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Redon is well known as a symbolist painter, but he also made many naturalist paintings.
I do not like the strong mystical, surrealist aspects in many of his works, but I admire his sensitive and colourful paintings, when he chose more realist themes like portraits, flowers or landscapes. The website http://www.odilon-redon.org shows a huge collection of his works, from which I have chosen a seashell, a landscape, and four studies of geranium as examples.
I was very impressed how Redon brings out an exquisite, erotic quality of the seashell, and liked the garden scene for its beautiful colour variations in the blue sky, the grey wall and the green grass. Also, I very much liked the colourful simplicity and beauty of the geraniums.
